Anthony Redmile, born in England in 1940, emerged as one of Britain’s most imaginative and unconventional designers of the late twentieth century. Largely self‑taught, he developed a theatrical, highly crafted style defined by curiosity, humour, and a fascination with natural materials. Working from his London studio in the 1970s, he produced furniture, mirrors, and decorative objects embellished with agate, horn, shells, silver and other organic elements, turning interiors into modern cabinets of curiosities. Each piece carried a narrative quality, blending raw natural forms with ornate detailing to create works that felt both fantastical and meticulously made. Redmile’s aesthetic reached its fullest expression on the Caribbean island of Mustique, where he designed interiors for several of its celebrated villas. At a time when many designers embraced minimalism, he leaned boldly into opulence. His work was tactile, exuberant, and unapologetically decorative, attracting an international clientele that included Rod Stewart, Jacqueline Onassis, and Erté. In Mustique’s lush environment, his imaginative furniture and objects transformed tropical homes into theatrical dreamscapes. These projects showcased his ability to fuse natural beauty with refined extravagance, creating immersive, escapist visions of luxury that remain emblematic of his singular creative spirit.
